Biomethane is a renewable gas produced through the methanization of organic materials such as agricultural waste, food waste, green waste, sewage sludge and other types of organic waste.
It is produced by a digestion process in which bacteria break down organic matter into methane and carbon dioxide: at this stage, the gas produced is biogas . The latter can then be purified to remove impurities and traces of CO2, in order to produce a pure gas with more than 95% methane: biomethane.
Biomethane can be used in a variety of ways, including as a fuel for vehicles, as an energy source for heat and electricity production, or injected into the existing natural gas network. It is considered a clean and renewable fuel because its production allows organic waste to be recovered by recovering the energy it releases as it degrades.
